One of the most important skills that I have had to learn in my life has been the ability to stay grounded. What is “staying grounded”? It is the ability to know what belongs to you and what belongs to other people. The feelings and emotions that often surround us are most often not of our own creation. When something different is being felt, quietly ask yourself is this really me, or do these feelings belong to someone in close proximity, or to someone who is in my thoughts or life? A clear pattern of acknowledgement and knowing, along with the ability to separate from these feelings and emotions will quickly establish itself as you practice the art of staying grounded. How do you stay grounded? Each of us needs to find our own practice, but taking deep, deep breaths is the perfect place to start.

In trying to move forward, it is sometimes necessary to go back to something familiar. It may be a part of yourself that you haven’t seen in a while, or maybe a friend, or an activity that you had forgotten that you once enjoyed. It could even be a behavior. There is strength in going back to test the waters and there is truth in the experience. Whether it be good or bad, when a discovery is made, it is then that you move forward. Keep going back to bring yourself more into the present.

While in the midst of my afternoon espresso, it dawned on me that I am actually happy! When did that happen and how did I come to that conclusion were the first questions that I asked myself. What was my first clue? I realized that I had gained 5 pounds! Yes, a 5 pound weight gain means happiness to this girl. Now, do I want to keep gaining, no! Will I do something about it, yes, but in the meantime, I am enjoying being happy! Getting happy is an art form, just like getting older, it is all in how you look at it. Gaining those 5 pounds made me realize that I was enjoying myself, enjoying my life, and most certainly enjoying good food, which is one of my highest priorities. You should be on the look out for happiness, it might just sneak up on you when you least expect it. Cheers!

Walk it out, talk it out, write it out, just get it out. The baggage that we carry is so unnecessary. Take a look at your baggage. Picture it in your mind. How many bags are you carrying? Can you decide to leave one behind? Will it be the oldest one, the newest one, the prettiest one, the ugliest one, which ever one you chose, take the time to leave it behind. You might have to remember something painful, hurtful, or unkind, but the exercise is so worthwhile. It will give you more space, more time, and more energy, to leave behind a few more bags. Baby steps lead to big steps that lead to giant steps that lead to freedom!

To own one’s own life is the most empowering of emotions. Whether good or bad, your life, your choices are your own and they are powerful. To take responsibility for your own actions and deeds is all a part of the journey toward enlightenment. It can be life affirming and life altering. Be who and what you want to be. If you have made a great decision, keep doing it. If you have made a terrible decision, fix it. A very wise friend once said “Karen, keep your eye on the prize” Those words have sustained me through quite a lot. Please do not let the behavior of others destroy who you are and what you want to be. Simply be who and what you are, one of God’s greatest gifts!

The question of the day, what happened to that girl? That girl was funny, creative, and carefree, always seeing the best in every situation even when her life was falling apart or was it? Maybe that should be the question that I ask today. Was my life really falling apart or was I simply saying enough is enough, I want something different, more in tune to whom I really am? Going through your past is often painful and full of emotion, but the hidden gem for me was discovering myself in the wreckage. That beautiful girl that I love! The one who loves life, food, cooking, reading, singing, dancing, sitting by the fire, her children, her home, her animals, her friends, her family! I love life and I believe in love! I believe in miracles and I believe in what I do! Can you say the same thing? If not, I think you need to sift through the wreckage! I promise, you are well worth the effort!

Remembering where you see things is often an issue. The quote “I strive to be defeated by greater and greater things” has stuck with me, reaching deep within my soul. I can not take credit for the words, but the effect of those words has been astonishing. When we are faced with challenges, the first reaction is to run, to hide, to let someone else deal with it. There is a different approach. Why not be excited, it means that we are ready for whatever challenge that lies ahead. We are moving forward! We may not like having to do it, but when it is all over we have something to be proud of. The toughest moments of my life have also been my greatest.

Do you believe in everything that you do? When you believe, and I mean truly believe in what you do, there is no stopping you! The tricky part comes when the people around you question or sidetrack you with negativity. This becomes an amazing opportunity to grow within yourself. You need to know that when others are negative toward you, it is only a representation of their own negativity toward themselves. Do not let others dictate how you feel about what you do and who you are! Isn’t it be better to be known as a light in the world as opposed to being referred to as the darkness?

The struggle of listening to my own voice stayed with me for the longest time. When you finally let go of the thoughts and judgement of others and really listen to what you have to say, do things really have the potential to move very quickly. Life changes, relationship changes, work changes, all move at a rapid pace. Overwhelming, challenging, mind blowing, and peaceful are a few of the adjectives that can be used to describe this state of being. All of us should strive to listen with the greatest of intent to our own voice. It is the one voice that has only our best interest at heart.

Closure, the act or process of closing something. Whether it be a relationship, a job, or a situation in life, do not rush closure, for it will come naturally. Everyone rushes, hurries to the end just so that it can be done to spare us being uncomfortable, or feeling any angst. Know that through that angst comes the ability to close a chapter or book the right way. Is there nothing to be said for completing a job well?
